The winding of an insulated wire is connected to a commutator (rotary switch) that applies current to the winding. The commutator allows each armature coil to be energized sequentially, and then a steady rotational force (called torque) occurs.


When the coils are opened and closed in sequence, a rotating magnetic field will occur. This magnetic field interacts with different magnetic fields of fixed magnets in the stator to generate torque, and then makes the torque rotate. These primary operating principles of DC motors allow them to convert the electrical energy in DC into mechanical energy through rotation, and then use it for pushing objects.
